The Innovation Process: 1960s Design Process for Old Fitzgerald Whiskey

by Alan Van Pelt on December 19, 2010

This is an amazing Madmen-esque video from the 1960s about Landor’s design process forĀ Old Fitzgerald Whiskey.

The video description:
“The Decanter,” a promotional film produced by Walter Landor and Associates in the 1960s, shows the start-to-finish process of several of Landor’s designs for Old Fitzgerald whiskey. Narrated by Walter himself, the film depicts creative teams illustrating and critiquing designs, industrial designers fabricating models, and research teams conducting focus groups and testing in Landor’s supermarket laboratory. All takes place on the famed Klamath ferryboat docked at San Francisco’s Pier 5, which housed Landor’s offices for some 20 years.”

What strikes you as similar or different to design processes today? I for one plan to get myself a pipe to help me innovate better.

I love this video! There are very few videos of the Design Process in action so it’s nice to see – pipe and all. This one has some great modelmaking technique – makes me want to get out and start making myself (and get a pipe too). I’d love to see what they did for a more complex brief.
